Course Synopsis – Advancing Your Anaesthesia Skills
Veterinary nurses play an integral role in patient peri-anaesthetic care and possess a wide range of skills that can be utilised throughout the anaesthetic period.
This interactive day will equip you with advanced anaesthesia skills such as ECG interpretation, invasive blood pressure placement and management, mechanical ventilation, CRI calculations, and some easy-to-use local anaesthetic techniques.

Lecture One: Understanding ECGs
Do you know your V-Fib from your V-Tach? When should you worry about a second degree AV block? Is lidocaine the answer to everything? If you want the answer to these questions and more, this is the session you’re looking for.
This lecture leaves all the big words at the door to help you really understand what is happening when we look at an ECG waveform. From cardiac anatomy to the electrical pathway, and what we are looking at when we see unusual complexes, this lecture will have you feeling like an ECG expert.

Lecture Two: Invasive Blood Pressure Monitoring Techniques
The placement and management of arterial cannulae is an advanced nursing skill that can provide valuable information about the patient’s cardiovascular function during the management of critical patients. This presentation will detail the placement of arterial catheters, the use of invasive blood pressure during anaesthesia, and troubleshooting methods.

Lecture Three: Mechanical Ventilation
Do you know your PIP from your PEEP?
Mechanical ventilation can appear a daunting and complex subject in the first instance but, this talk will discuss the basic differences in ventilator types, discuss clinical indications for mechanical ventilation, and equip you with all the know-how for which settings to use (and which to avoid). Whether you have a new ventilator in practice, are considering one, or are contemplating the move into referral nursing, this is your complete guide to mechanical ventilation.

Lecture Four: CRI Workshop
Constant rate infusions are a fantastic tool for providing additional multimodal analgesia, delivery of drugs with a short half-life, and reducing fluctuations in drug plasma levels. Calculating CRIs can appear daunting at first but this workshop will have you excited to get back into practice and show off your newfound maths skills.
Lecture Five: Local Anaesthesia Techniques
Local anaesthesia provides complete cessation of nociception and can be used in addition to other multimodal analgesia techniques in almost any situation. This lecture will provide an overview of pain perception, why we should be using local anaesthesia, and how we can incorporate it into common procedures.
