🎬 How do you build a new life when everything you know has been left behind?
On 19 November at 19:00, Polish Cinema for Beginners invites you to a special screening of Agnieszka Zwiefka’s "Silent Trees" ("Drzewa milczą", 2024), followed by an in-person conversation with the film’s director.
About the film
Sixteen-year-old Runa flees Iraq with her family and reaches the Polish-Belarusian border. After a tragic loss, she suddenly finds herself responsible for her four younger brothers and her father. As the family tries to build a new life in Poland, Runa navigates the challenges of growing up, taking on adult responsibilities and holding on to her dreams of studying law.
Combining observational documentary filmmaking with animation based on Runa’s own drawings, "Silent Trees" offers an intimate and deeply moving perspective on migration, family, resilience and the search for a future.
The film received the Golden Lajkonik for Best Polish Documentary at the Krakow Film Festival.
Meet the director
Following the screening, we’ll welcome Agnieszka Zwiefka for a special conversation about the film, its protagonists and the process of bringing Runa’s story to the screen. This is an opportunity to hear directly from the filmmaker, explore the creative decisions behind the documentary and ask questions about the stories and experiences that inspired it.
This screening also marks the final Polish Cinema for Beginners event of 2026. Join us to close the year with a powerful film and a conversation with its director.
