Opening Remarks by Sara Asalya

We are honored to have Sara Asalya, the Executive Director of Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, kick off our event. Her insights and leadership are pivotal to our community and promise to enrich our gathering.
Sara Asalya is an award-winning leader with over 15 years of international and Canadian experience across non-profits, NGOs, think tanks, and higher education. She has been recognized extensively for her advocacy for immigrant rights, including being named one of Canada's Top 25 Immigrants in 2018 and one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence in 2021.

Sara has authored numerous national editorials on issues such as refugee resettlement, gender-based violence, and immigrant labor market integration. She holds advanced degrees and certificates in Higher Education, English Literature, Community Engagement, and Immigration Studies.

With a decade of leadership in non-profit management and research, Sara's own experiences as an immigrant have fueled her dedication to community advocacy, particularly in newcomer settlement and employment. She founded The Newcomer Students’ Association, focusing on education, migration, and social justice for post-secondary immigrant and refugee students.

In 2019, Sara joined NEW as a Program Manager, later advancing to Senior Manager of Programs and Strategic Initiatives. Here, she leads efforts in skills development, gender equality, and empowerment for immigrant and refugee women.
