Please join us on Saturday, February 14th in support of Blueberry🫐
Blueberry, now known as Blue, came from an animal hoarding situation when she had been shot in the face and was living with bullet shrapnel scattered throughout her head, nasal passages, and jaw and heartworm disease. She was in constant discomfort - no one could touch or move her mouth, she couldn't yawn, she wouldn't play with toys, and she suffered from significant discharge from her nostrils and eyes. She has had improvement with pain medication but she didn't deserve to suffer any longer. She was moved into our foster to adopt program in October when she met her fabulous new parents. Warrior Dog has worked with multiple vet partners and Blue's new parents to determine the safest course of action for all of her medical needs.
Blue had a consultation with Animal & Emergency Referral Center (AERC). The plan began with an anesthetized oral exam, dental X-rays, CT scan, and rhinoscopy. It was determined that she had embedded pieces of shrapnel, shattered pieces of bone, and many fractured and worn down teeth. AERC was able to remove the damaged teeth and piece of bone but the shrapnel was too numerous and too embedded within the tissue of the nasal cavity to be seen and removed. All of this damage has predisposed Blue to secondary nasal cavity inflammation and a higher risk of bacterial infections that will be lifelong. While there are treatments available for inflammation and infection within the nose, the destruction of her nasal cavity from the trauma can unfortunately not be repaired and will result in chronic nasal disease. Her nasal cavity is unlikely to significantly impact her quality or quantity of life at this time and we are hopeful that she will recover with little to no pain and mild discharge.
Once Blue is stable and her injuries are all addressed, she will go through treatment for heartworm disease.
Blue has been through so much but still has a journey ahead of her. With your support, she has a real chance at a pain-free, happy life.
