PAWA welcomes James Kroner to teach our Little Gems workshop this year.

The focus of this plein air workshop will be cityscape (urban landscape.) James will work and demo in oils. All mediums welcome.

Exact locations will be provided to registrants. Locations may vary to include distant city views, and locations in the city of Seattle.

Times: 9:00am - 3:30pm

COST for WORKSHOP: $475. NO REFUNDS. Lunch will be included daily.

MEETING LOCATION: Maps and exact coordinates for each meeting location will be provided to workshop attendees. You must arrange to have your own transportation.

WORKSHOP GOALS:

This plein air workshop will be focused on city scenes and landscapes with architectural elements. James will demo and discuss how students can achieve an abstract quality through the language of paint. James introduces the idea of "impact vs. payoff", i.e. how to draw the viewer in from across the room (impact) and how to then keep the viewer interested (payoff). How to achieve the feel of light and movement within the scene.

Emphasis also on composition - what creates a strong dynamic composition through use of diagonals, value planes, light and dark, and edges with strong edge variety. Limited palette - how to use color without overthinking color, focusing instead on strong values and value interpretation.

James will work with you to discuss your painting's focal point and how to direct the viewers' attention where you intend. This also includes using a visual pattern or "road" within the composition; using edges and values to direct the viewer to certain areas of your work while simplifying other areas. You will complete roughly 5 paintings in three days. Sketchbooks for sketches and notes are requested to be brought each day.

SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT: A detailed supply list will be provided after registering. You must bring your own plein air equipment and supplies. In case of rain, please be prepared to bring a personal cover/umbrella as not all locations have covers.

LUNCH : Lunch is included in the workshop cost. Every day, one hour will be given to attendees to allow time for lunch. Bottled water will be available from the workshop coordinator.

SUGGESTED LODGING: Various lodging options are available in the Seattle area. Lodging is at your own choice and cost.

REFUND POLICY: There are no refunds if you cannot attend. For circumstances PAWA cannot control, PAWA reserves the right to cancel the workshop, in this case, a full refund will be issued.
