Paw Paw Baiting Workshop

Join us at GROW for a hands-on workshop all about one of North America’s most fascinating native fruit trees, the pawpaw. During this family-friendly event, participants will learn about the history of the pawpaw tree, its role in North American ecosystems, and why it has been an important food source for people and wildlife for generations.

Our Executive Director and Master Gardener, Ginger-Rose Krueck, will lead a short presentation covering the unique biology of the pawpaw tree, including its unusual pollination process. Unlike many fruit trees, pawpaws are primarily pollinated by flies and beetles, which are attracted to the flower’s natural scent.

After the presentation, participants will help with a traditional orchard practice known as pawpaw baiting. This process helps attract pollinators to the trees and can increase fruit production. Volunteers will tie small pieces of fish to fishing line and walk the 14-acre GROW site, attaching the bait near pawpaw trees throughout the food forest.

This is a fun and interactive way to learn about native fruit production while helping support the growth of the GROW food forest.
