How did a 16-year-old kid from Idaho become the first mountain guide in the Tetons? Join Kimberly Geil, founder of the Exum History Project, for the story of Paul Petzoldt's unlikely path to becoming a legend of American mountaineering. On July 25, 1924, Petzoldt and his climbing partner Ralph Herron made their first ascent of the Grand Teton. That climb - and three more summits that summer - launched what would become an illustrious guiding career and led to the founding of both Exum Mountain Guides and the National Outdoor Leadership School.
Herron and Petzoldt documented their historic climb with photographs that were lost for nearly a century. Now rediscovered, these rarely seen images offer an intimate glimpse into a pivotal moment in climbing history. You'll have the chance to see a select few, for only the second time in public, and learn how you can help bring them home to the History Jackson Hole collection through a matching fundraising campaign.
Free and open to the public. Early arrival suggested; limited seating.
