About this Event

Come discover the Revolutionary history that is literally all around us—among the stones, stories, and patriots of New Hackensack Cemetery as well as other hidden places in the town at this FREE family-friendly event! (Rain date Columbus Day Monday, October 12, same time). Come any time during event hours.

Step back in time and meet a local patriot - Zephaniah Platt - who helped shape our community during the American Revolution. On this special, family friendly day at the New Hackensack Cemetery, attendees will meet a patriot buried there who served in Colonel Brinckerhoff’s Dutchess County Militia, 2nd Regiment, and learn more about his life and the lives and contributions of other patriots buried there. Explore the fascinating world of colonial headstones and learn what some of the symbols and inscriptions mean. You'll also learn how to safely clean and care for historic tombstones, and younger history detectives will enjoy a special scavenger hunt designed just for them. Plus, pick up your free copy of the Wappingers Historical Society's new guidebook: Wappinger Revolutionary Roots - History, Heroes, and Hidden Places to learn more about the people and places that connect the Town of Wappinger to America's fight for independence.

We gratefully acknowledge Dutchess County government for their generous grant support which makes this event and the accompanying guidebook materials possible
