Award-winning storyteller Gail Thomas takes us on a gripping emotional rollercoaster of dating, cancer, and magic mushrooms.
About this Event

Catch Patient 13 before the show heads to Edinburgh Fringe this August!

Chronically single, Gail has always been good at staying busy, setting boundaries and avoiding intimacy. That is, until a scary diagnosis makes her realize that she might just need to slow down, chill out, and get some help. But, who can she trust? “I got rid of all the toxic people and there was no one left.”

This true. dark comedy solo show tracks Gail’s quest to find the line between herself and others after a cancer diagnosis and her participation as patient #13 in a ground-breaking FDA study that gave psilocybin (magic mushrooms) to cancer patients with anxiety and depression. The study has blazed a trail for the potential legalization of the psychedelics for use as a medical treatment. Gail has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Atlantic (Michael Pollan), Vsauce, and CNN. Now you can witness this crazy true story live on stage!

Winner of LA Progressive Progie and LA Hidden Gems awards.

REVIEWS:

"...Gail Thomas is a born storyteller... she makes you feel like her best friend in seconds...This is a show that is not afraid of darkness, but for all its talk of death, depression, anxiety and medical nightmares, it has something quirky and uplifting about it, and the comedy really lands...:"

— Amanda Callas, Broadway World

".. an always entertaining one-woman show that dares delve into taboo topics typically overlooked by romcoms. Artistically acted ... "

— Ed Rampell, Hollywood Progressive

"Magnetic and engaging in her intensity and candor… a masterclass in storytelling."

– Guy Picot, Gia on Move

A note from the Director, Dan Oliverio:

“Although the play is an intimate story, it reflects our greater cultural concern with how we care for one another and how institutionalized fear and loneliness keep us apart, [echoing] the longing we so acutely feel for connectedness, bravery, and hope. All over the world, people are reexamining their assumptions about medical care and treatment… reevaluating the stigmas around certain drugs and diseases. I think it’s no accident that these stories are reaching a crescendo with Patient 13 opening at the Fringe at the same time as psychedelics are as mental health treatment are headline news. The show is part of a watershed moment.”

A note from the Writer, Gail Thomas:

My goal with Patient 13 is to entertain, inspire, and empower others to appreciate the nuances and absurdity of life. Experiencing universal human emotions together in the theater can be transformative. Originally shared in bits on New York City storytelling stages, the show has grown thanks to the support of my director Dan and enthusiastic audiences.
I think of my audience as close friends. Patient 13 is my gift to people who grapple with tough decisions, complicated relationships, and self-love. I hope that it helps people see that they are not alone. We're all in this together, like it or not.
