T. Patton Biddle—better known throughout Athens as Pat the Wiz—became an important part of the city’s emerging music scene after arriving in 1980. As a trusted sound engineer, he worked with many of the artists who helped establish Athens as a nationally recognized music community. At the original 40 Watt Club and other local venues, Pat provided sound for bands including R.E.M., Pylon, The Michael Guthrie Band, Love Tractor, the Squalls, Guadalcanal Diary, Dreams So Real, the Kilkenny Cats, 10,000 Maniacs, and many others. He also provided the sound system and engineering for the opening night of the 40 Watt Club on Clayton Street in April 1981.
Pat’s contributions extended well beyond making musicians sound their best onstage. He recorded hundreds of live performances directly from the soundboard, preserving rare moments from both nationally known artists and local bands whose music might otherwise have been lost. His extensive archive captures the creativity, energy and sense of community that made the Athens music scene so distinctive.
Through www., Pat has generously shared this history with music lovers around the world. His “Band of the Week” project continued for an extraordinary 566 weeks, while his “Athens Redux” series has featured complete historic performances, photographs, posters and personal stories. Through decades of recording, collecting and sharing, Pat has become not only a legendary Athens soundman, but also one of the most devoted caretakers of the city’s musical history, all at his own expense.
On March 4 of this year, Pat was admitted to the hospital and did not return home until April 30, following three separate hospital admissions, extensive emergency surgery and two in-patient rehabilitation stays. The ordeal left him extremely weak, as Parkinson’s disease has made his recovery especially challenging. The generosity of friends who organized and supported a GoFundMe provided tremendous help with some out-of-pocket expenses, but the fight is not over. With his wife, Jean, serving as his primary caregiver, Pat continues to need home health care, physical and speech therapy, and essential safety modifications to help him rebuild his strength and regain the ground he has lost. Tonight we celebrate Pat's accomplishments to our beloved music scene by helping to raise money to off-set the Biddle's mounting medical costs.
