PASUP's Plastic-Free Potluck Picnic
About this Event
Please join Pittsburghers Against Single-Use Plastic () at our annual ! This event is free and welcoming to all; bring your family, friends, and neighbors!
Bring food to share as we fight the tide of plastic trash! Challenge yourself to buy, prepare, and serve food without any single-use plastic (SUP) ...or avoid as much as you can, and bring the plastic scraps with you. The lowest-SUP food wins a prize! (Please list all ingredients in your food to protect those with allergies.)
This FREE event will be held on the front porch and lawn of the Pittsburgh Friends Meeting House in Shadyside (Inside the Meeting House in case of bad weather). Bring a dish to share, reusable dishes and utensils for your own use, and a blanket or lawn chair on which to picnic! We’ll have plastic-free, non-alcoholic cold drinks. Please help us plan by registering.
New this year: Bring your empty plastic prescription bottles, including lids, to a table at the picnic where you’ll learn
- what are the issues with REUSING prescription bottles; can they be washed effectively, or do drug residues remain?
- what packaging made from RENEWABLE resources might be used instead of plastic bottles, and how would the environmental impact differ?
- what can we do to REPURPOSE or RECYCLE the bottles that inevitably come into our lives while we wait for our pharmacies to change their packaging?
- who can we contact to demand less wasteful packaging?
In addition to studying the pill-bottle problem and enjoying a meal together, we’ll have:
- Speakers explaining various aspects of the SUP problem and what you can do to take action
- A chance to meet and learn about PASUP and other local groups working to make our world less plastic
- Vendors offering alternatives to plastic
- Games and activities for young and old
