National Park Service (NPS) land, the Cedar Point North (CPN) site contains an array of mounded shellworks that were constructed in reference to astronomical events.
In this presentation by Victoria (Vic) Hayes, she reveals the latest findings from three years of intensive collaboration between the University of North Florida and the NPS. She’ll go beyond the excavations to explore a fascinating discovery: these complex shellworks were built in alignment with the summer and winter solstices. Join us as we examine the data and dive into the ritual shell mounding practices of the past Indigenous communities who shaped this unique place on the lower St. Johns River landscape.
