Passport to the Past: Archaeology Days at Bonnechere Provincial Park, Saturday

Join the Ottawa Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society and staff and Friends of Bonnechere Provincial Park for a day, a weekend or a week. You are invited to visit and / or participate in a public archaeology programme to learn about the interesting and fun activities that archaeologists use to learn about the past around us. There’s something for everyone and every age group. Meet with archaeologists and “dig in” with hands-on activities and demonstrations in the morning, an evening meet up and a Sunday morning low key fun activity with a take home souvenir.
SATURDAY, July 11th - 10 am – 12:30 pm
Public Archaeology Activities
Ottawa Chapter OAS – What is archaeology?
Meet the volunteers who make it happen with brochures, posters, artifacts and more
Every sherd tells a story – Mend broken ceramics; we all love a puzzle!
Flintknapping – Archaeologist Brad Drouin demonstrates how stone tools were made.
Friends of the Park – Learn everything about the history and natural diversity of Bonnechere Park.
What’s in the Bag? Artifacts arrive from the field dirty – help wash a few and see what we learn!
Time Flies! Step way back in time as archaeologist Ken Swayze takes you across the human time line.
Meet Courtney Cameron, archaeologist, with artifacts from the Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre
Meet local authors Anne Burchat and Roderick “Rory” MacKay –
Anne’s youth book Aprons and Moccasins explores local Indigenous and Kashubian cultures.
Rory has authored several books about the histories of the Bonnechere River and Algonquin Park.
SATURDAY NITE “LIVE” – a lively slide show presentation with artifacts & popcorn!
July 11th - 7 – 8 pm Davenport Centre
What is archaeology all about? How do we do our research? A picture is worth everything and helps us to figure out the simple steps each archaeological project goes through before, during and after the field work happens. We will have artifacts from projects in and around the Park. All are welcome.
