Participatory Theatre Workshop: Exploring Agency & Change

Join us for an interactive theatre workshop exploring how we can create change in our everyday lives and communities.

Inspired by the Refugee Week 2026 theme, Courage, this participatory session invites us to reflect on the systems, situations and experiences that can make us feel powerless, and to explore together how we might respond with creativity, solidarity and action.

Through games, movement and theatre exercises inspired by Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed, participants will collectively investigate questions of agency, belonging and transformation. No previous theatre experience is required.

The workshop is open to everyone. We particularly encourage people with lived experience of migration, refugees, asylum seekers, and those working in migration, community, social or cultural sectors to attend.

Together, we will create a welcoming space to share experiences, build connections and rehearse possibilities for change.

Facilitators

Andrew Awad is a London-based Educator, Drama practitioner, and Creative producer from Egypt. He is passionate about exploring the self and potentials of social justice through accessible art forms. Working through alternative and critical pedagogy, he designs and executes workshop programmes for youth and adults, focusing primarily on refugees, asylum seekers and people with migrant backgrounds in the UK and globally. He also works with workers and trade unions across Scotland and England.

When he has the opportunity, you’ll find Andrew absorbing sunlight somewhere, playing Darabuka, Cajun, or drumming basically on anything. He loves being on the road, hitchhiking and sharing knowledge with strangers in different places around the globe. He holds an MA International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS University of London and a BA Political Science from Cairo University.

Carlota Matos is a Portuguese theatre and performance artist, and co-founder of Refugee Week Portugal. Her work explores identity, migration, mental ill-health and social justice through participatory performance, often crossing other forms such as video, sound and installation. She regularly works with communities, young people, charities, and artists from different disciplines. Her practice is rooted in access, with a particular focus on migrant and disabled communities.

She has directed and facilitated projects for companies such as Local Learning, Firebird Theatre, Many Minds, and Travelling Light, and has been commissioned by Projekt Europa and Counterpoints Arts. She completed residencies in O Rumo do Fumo, CAMPUS Paulo Cunha e Silva, Staatstheater Mainz, and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg. Recent works include TASTE (2025, UK) and POUR UNE VIE MEILLEURE (2025-26, FR). She was awarded the Farnham Maltings Graduate Award (2018) and was selected for Future Laboratory (2022-2025).

Through her work, Carlota is interested in merging the personal and political, and using co-creation to open spaces for dialogue, reflection and collective imagination.

After the workshop, join us for the Refugee Week Portugal 2026 Picnic! Taking place in the same venue, this will be a collective moment of celebration to close this year's festival edition, with music, food, performances and activities.

عندما تسنح له الفرصة، ستجد أندرو منغمسًا في أشعة الشمس في مكان ما، أو يعزف على الطبلة أو الكاخون،. يهوى السفر والتجول وتبادل المعرفة مع الغرباء في أماكن مختلفة حول العالم. وهو حاصل على ماجستير في الدراسات الدولية والدبلوماسية من كلية الدراسات الشرقية والأفريقية جامعة لندن وبكالوريوس في العلوم السياسية من جامعة القاهرة

كارلوتا ماتوس هي فنانة أداء ومسرح برتغالية، ومؤسِّسة مشاركة لـ«أسبوع اللاجئين في البرتغال». تستكشف أعمالها موضوعات الهوية والهجرة والصحة النفسية والعدالة الاجتماعية من خلال عروض تشاركية، غالبًا ما تتداخل مع أشكال فنية أخرى مثل الفيديو والصوت والتركيبات الفنية. تعمل بانتظام مع المجتمعات المحلية والشباب والمنظمات الخيرية والفنانين من مختلف التخصصات. ترتكز ممارستها الفنية على مبدأ

بعد انتهاء ورشة العمل، انضموا إلينا في ”نزهة أسبوع اللاجئين البرتغال 2026“! تقام النزهة في المكان نفسه، وستكون مناسبة احتفالية جماعية تختتم دورة المهرجان لهذا العام، مع موسيقى وطعام وعروض وأنشطة.

Junta-te a nós para uma oficina de teatro participativo que explora como podemos criar mudança nas nossas vidas quotidianas e comunidades.

Inspirada no tema da Refugee Week 2026, Coragem, esta sessão convida-nos a refletir sobre os sistemas, situações e experiências que nos podem fazer sentir sem poder de ação, e a explorar em conjunto como podemos responder através da criatividade e solidariedade.

Através de jogos, movimento e exercícios teatrais inspirados no Teatro do Oprimido de Augusto Boal, os participantes irão explorar coletivamente questões de pertença, ação e transformação. Não é necessária experiência prévia em teatro.

A oficina é aberta a todas as pessoas. Encorajamos particularmente a participação de pessoas com experiência vivida de migração, refugiadas, requerentes de asilo, bem como de profissionais que trabalhem nas áreas da migração, ação social, cultura ou comunidade.

Juntos, iremos criar um espaço acolhedor para partilhar experiências, construir ligações e ensaiar possibilidades de mudança.

Facilitadores

Andrew Awad é educador, facilitador de teatro e produtor criativo egípcio, atualmente baseado em Londres. É apaixonado pela exploração do potencial da justiça social através de formas artísticas acessíveis. Através de pedagogias alternativas e críticas, desenvolve e facilita programas e oficinas para jovens e adultos, trabalhando sobretudo com refugiados, requerentes de asilo e pessoas com percursos migratórios no Reino Unido e internacionalmente. Trabalha também com trabalhadores e sindicatos em diferentes regiões de Inglaterra e da Escócia.

Quando tem oportunidade, podem encontrá-lo a aproveitar o sol algures, a tocar darbuka, cajón ou praticamente qualquer coisa que faça ritmo. Gosta de viajar, fazer boleia e partilhar conhecimento com pessoas de diferentes lugares do mundo. É mestre em Estudos Internacionais e Diplomacia pela SOAS University of London e licenciado em Ciência Política pela Universidade do Cairo.

A sua prática está enraizada na acessibilidade e participação, com especial foco em comunidades migrantes e pessoas com deficiência.
