About this Event
SCREEN TIME: NOTIFIED
Tuesday January 27th from 6-8pm
Gladstone House’s Record Room (1214 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1J6)
You are invited to a one night silent art exhibit featuring drawings by Visual Artist, Laura Heaney, where we’ll be physically present, but our connection will be digital.
This immersive event is inspired by Laura Heaney's Screen Time coloured pencil drawings of people lit by their digital devices. You will find Laura stationed in the centre of the room as a performative part of the exhibit, engrossed in her phone and the group Whatsapp chat that all audience members will be invited to join upon arrival, refraining from any and all interpersonal interactions (please don’t take offense if Laura doesn't acknowledge your presence between the hours of 6-8pm – it’s part of the performance).
In addition to this Laura has enlisted Bay Mud's electronic musical expertise to create a digital soundscape. The audience's participation in the group chat will feed notification sounds to Bay Mud’s synthesizers, where he’ll be able to manipulate them live, adding an auditory element to the room’s environment.
The desired outcome is to transform a traditional art exhibition into an interactive event that utilizes the concepts showcased in the drawings, animating them beyond the canvas in a constructed social environment. Laura's aim is to create a space that investigates the relationship between performer, artwork and audience, by involving the participation of observers to uncover notions of reflection and connection.
Screen Time: Notified is the final activation of Laura Heaney's 2025 artist residency at the Gladstone House, and is a subsect of the DesignTO Festival show at the Gladstone, Machine, which also features one of Laura's Screen Time drawings in the front foyer of the hotel, alongside work by other artists Giorgio Ceccato, Paola Poletto, Chris Rouleau and Caleb Saraby Sandblom who explore our complex relationship with machines.
Free admission. Cash bar.
Remarks at 6:30pm for Machine
