Description

This class will introduce you to TBRI®, a holistic, evidence-based, and trauma-informed intervention designed specifically for children from "hard places". As a caregiver, you may encounter behaviors that seem "disrespectful and challenging," but these are often survival strategies developed in response to early relational trauma. We will explore the six early risk factors that can change a child’s brain chemistry and developmental trajectory. You will understand the problem and how the three harmonious sets of principles—Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting—provide a path to hope and healing.

Connecting Principles are the "heart and soul" of TBRI®, designed to help children from difficult backgrounds learn to trust and form meaningful bonds. We’ll do a deep dive on two primary strategies: Mindfulness and Engagement. Mindfulness requires caregivers to be acutely aware of what they bring to an interaction, including their own attachment histories and the specific behaviors that "trigger behavior". We will discuss the Attachment Cycle and how consistent, warm responsiveness in the first year of life builds trust, self-worth, and self-efficacy .

You will learn practical Engagement Strategies to connect with your child non-verbally, including the use of soft eye contact to increase dopamine and aid learning, healthy touch (like a hand on a shoulder), and behavior matching. We will also explore the power of Playful Interaction, which disarms fear and strengthens relationships by speaking the natural language of childhood.

TBRI is based on the research and methods developed by the late Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross, from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University.

Presenter Info: The class is taught by Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) Practitioner, Tristen McGhee. As an Early Childhood Educator, Tristen is an adoptive mom, writer, and advocate for foster/kinship/adopted children. She has substantial experience working with vulnerable families to find a path of hope and healing.
