Who is the ‘public’ of a public university? What exactly is public about public universities? Do they, or should they, serve special “public” aims? Professor Kutz offers a novel account of the role which public institutions of higher learning should play in a democratic society. Beyond simply benefitting the public, proudly public universities should both model and embody distinctively public values.
Christopher Kutz is the C. William Maxeiner Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of the Kadish Center for Morality, Law, and Public Affairs at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of "Complicity: Ethics and Law for a Collective Age" (Cambridge University Press, 2000) and "On War and Democracy" (Princeton University Press, 2016). He is currently working on a book about conceptions of the public in a democratic society.
Light refreshments will be provided following the lecture.
