We invite you to join the Parkville Symphonic Band as we continue our 30th season with a spring concert of music for the stage, ranging from Romantic period grand opera, to American Broadway hits. Featured will be a medley of the energetic and dramatic songs and dances from Bizet’s "Carmen", filled with more memorable and familiar tunes than any other opera ever written. Other selections will include the passionate and dramatic music of "La Bohéme", followed by the lively and upbeat songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "Oklahoma!", and more! This concert will be presented April 6th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the Park University campus in Parkville, Missouri. Admittance to the concert is free, with freewill donations accepted for the Washington Chapel Restoration fund. -------------------------------------
Built in 1907, the beautiful Washington Chapel has served for 118 years as the spiritual, social, and visual focal point of Parkville’s African American community. The impressive stone building is the only remaining Black church in the Parkville area, and due to its history and architecture, is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Years of neglect have taken their toll with repairs to the building, both inside and out, urgently needed. A fund-raising campaign begun in 2023 brought in a major grant and many donations that along with extensive donated labor have enabled considerable progress on the restoration. However, a critical juncture has been reached as these funds are now depleted with much work yet to go. With the labor being donated, contributions for materials will stretch much farther as they will enable the volunteer workers to continue their efforts toward completion of the project
