The building was built in 1873, the first owner moved out in 1882 after the death of his wife. The house stood empty until 1885 when shipbuilder and industrialist Mountjoy Pearse resided, until 1926 when Olympic medallist Harold E Kitching MBE moved into Elmwood. Due to the risk of air raids the house was sold to chemical giants ICI who used Elmwood as a research laboratory until transforming it into a community centre in 1952.
The ghost of a woman who committed suicide is seen wandering the house, and footsteps, the smell of perfume, smoke and TCP, along with children's laughter and running have all been encountered within the building. Equipment malfunctions and drained batteries are reported. A ladies voice crying and calling out has been heard, along with much darker spirits. One entity is seen as a shadow and heard to make growling noises, along with snarls, groans, coughing and laughter. There are also reports of people being physically grabbed by unseen hands.
