A History Steeped in Illness, War, and Loss
Opened in 1897, Dunham served as the first municipal tuberculosis hospital in the United States, spanning over 115 acres and housing more than 600 patients at its peak. Long before the hospital existed, the land nearby was used as an Potter’s Field, where an estimated 10,000 victims of cholera and other disease outbreaks were buried.
The site also functioned as a Civil War hospital camp, adding yet another layer of trauma, care, and human presence. The hospital officially closed in 1973, but many believe the energy tied to decades of illness, treatment, and loss never truly left the grounds.
Paranormal Activity & Investigator Experiences
Reports from investigators and visitors at Dunham include:
Voices, coughing, and footsteps heard within the underground tunnels, historically used to move patients, supplies, and the deceased
Shadow figures and disembodied conversations reported in former treatment and occupational spaces
Electronics malfunctioning inside the auditorium, with figures seen along the balcony
Strange reflections and apparitions appearing in mirrors within dressing rooms
Apparitions of Civil War soldiers and EVPs captured across the grounds
Activity here is not isolated to one area. It is spread across decades of use and multiple buildings, making Dunham a deeply layered investigation site.
