This season, I wish to honor our beloved founder, Terry Ellen Shields, who passed away last year on my birthday, 9/06. To celebrate her spirit, we will present “Bolero,” a Flamenco‑inspired piece I choreographed many years ago for CBC when Miss Shields was still our director and I was volunteering by her side. She loved “Bolero”—it was her favorite.
The last CBC performance Miss Shields attended was “Paquita” at the Charleston Music Hall, just before the pandemic. In her memory, we are bringing “Paquita” back this year—an elegant, spirited ballet that captures her spunk, her generosity, and her joy for life.
Miss Shields touched the lives of countless children. For our younger dancers, I’ve chosen “Le Jardin.” She was the gardener of our community, tending so many tiny seeds and watching them blossom into beautiful dancers—and even more beautiful human beings.
We will also share “Hope,” a ballet I choreographed a few years ago. To me, it reflects both my feelings and Miss Shields’s hopes for our children—their bright futures, their resilience, and the lasting imprint that thoughtful guidance and art can leave on a young life.
Through these works, we honor Miss Shields’s legacy by continuing what she loved most: nurturing hearts, minds, and artistry—one step at a time.
