Paper Collage Cloth Workshop with DNJ Paper

Join National Works on Paper finalist Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran & Jake Nakashima-Edwards for a hands-on workshop exploring the creative possibilities of paper, cloth and stitching.
Working with an inspiring mix of handmade paper, fabric offcuts, recycled textiles & fashion magazines, participants will experiment with layering, composition, colour & pattern to create richly textured collage surfaces. Through a combination of collage & simple hand-sewing techniques, you'll transform collected materials into a unique quilted textile work that can be displayed at home or incorporated into an ongoing creative project.
Inspired by the material experimentation & ideas explored in the National Works on Paper exhibition, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a featured exhibiting artist while discovering new approaches to working across paper & textile traditions.
No previous sewing, textile or collage experience is necessary. Some materials supplied, however we encourage you to bring your own special memory making fabrics & papers. Light refreshements included.
DNJ Paper is a Melbourne-based creative practice dedicated to exploring paper as both a material & a medium for artistic expression. Drawing on traditions of papermaking, textile processes & sustainable design, DNJ Paper works with recycled fibres & reclaimed materials to create handmade paper, sculptural objects & participatory workshops. Through a process that values experimentation, tactility & resourcefulness, DNJ Paper encourages people to rethink everyday materials & discover new possibilities through making.
Daphne Mohajer va Pesaran (PhD) is a multidisciplinary artist, designer & educator whose practice investigates the intersections of textiles, material culture, sustainability & contemporary craft. She is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Fashion & Textiles at RMIT University's College of Design & Social Context, Melbourne, where she teaches and researches innovative approaches to textile design and material practice.
This workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with Daphne's creative approach, gain insight into her artistic practice & explore some of the material ideas that underpin her work featured in the exhibition.
