Swell, well, well... 1990, San Francisco. David, Sean, Tim et John fondent un monument de l'indie-rock US : Swell. Entre le post-rock de Slint, le slowcore de Codeine, le rock écorché de Chokebore et la lo-fi de Silver Jews, Swell insuffle un son folk unique, un chant monocorde, jamais monotone; une americana très cinématographique. Le groupe se fait rare dans les années 2000. David Freel, la voix de Swell, un temps surnommé "le parrain du lo-fi" s'éteint en 2022, laissant ses camarades porter sa flamme pour une ultime tournée en Europe. Philippe Gunst du groupe belge Fragment se joint aux trois membres originels pour honorer la mémoire d'un songwriter disparu trop tôt.

Si son groupe défonçait littéralement les codes du grunge pour des affaires très ébréchées, lui compose en solo depuis 2000 des chansons folk guitare/piano, fébriles, sur le fil, sur les poils. Sa patte est inimitable. Son impact trop sous-estimé.
