Panel discussion: The Satellite Economy
About this Event
Most of the New Space Economy currently revolves around the launching of commercial satellites. There are now over 15,000 satellites in low earth orbit serving a range of needs from navigation, global communications, defence, and climate monitoring.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX now accounts for 80% of all satellite launches and his Starlink company makes up more than two thirds of all satellites orbiting the Earth. In June, Musk launched the biggest stock market release in history, following SpaceX combining with his AI business and his announcement that SpaceX would launch 1 million data centres.
The plan is seen as absurd by many, the stock absurdly overvalued, but it points to the hubris of companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origins, and the dangers of our crowded heavens. Increasingly, control of low, middle and high earth orbit will become the key focus for any superpower. Crowded space orbits will endanger rocket launches, disable earth based telescopes and increase the danger to commercial aircraft.
In this panel we invite key experts to reflect on the dynamics of the satellite economy and how the ownership of the heavens relates to terrestrial digital sovereignty.
