Panel Discussion: Jim Marshall: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Join us for a special afternoon celebrating the work and enduring legacy of longtime San Francisco-based photographer (1936–2010), best known for his photographs of musicians and the countercultural revolution that transformed the United States during the 1960s and ’70s.

Moderated by the Curator of Photography and Student Art, SFO Museum, Allie Haeusslein, Amelia Davis, owner of Jim Marshall Photography LLC and Marshall’s longtime studio manager, and Ken Light, Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism and curator of the Center for Photography at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, will discuss Marshall’s remarkable career, his Bay Area connections, and how his work fits within the traditions of photojournalism and social documentary photography of his era.

They will also discuss their joint efforts to preserve Marshall’s legacy through the establishment of the Jim Marshall Fellowships in Photography at Berkeley Journalism’s Center for Photography in 2014, which supports a new generation of journalists who use photography to tell stories.

About the panelists:

Amelia Davis is a San Francisco–based photographer who studied photography at the University of California, Davis, where she received a BA in Studio Art. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and juried and group exhibitions, published in magazines and textbooks, and included in private collections.

Davis is the recipient of grants for her photographic documentary books, The First Look, about breast cancer survivors; My Story: A Photographic Essay on Life with Multiple Sclerosis, about living with MS; and Faces of Osteoporosis. Her work has received recognition for both photography and public health communication, reflecting her commitment to using photography to educate and empower people.

Davis is also the owner of Jim Marshall Photography LLC and the steward of Jim Marshall’s extensive photographic archive. Since Marshall’s death in 2010, she has dedicated herself to preserving, protecting, and expanding his legacy through exhibitions, publishing, collecting, and the continued development and cataloging of his archive. Under her leadership, Marshall’s work has reached new audiences around the world through major exhibitions and publications. Davis also accepted the Recording Academy’s posthumous 2014 GRAMMY Trustees Award on behalf of Jim Marshall and was a driving force behind the award-winning documentary Show Me the Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall and its companion book.

Ken Light has worked as a documentary photographer and filmmaker, focusing on social issues facing America for over fifty years. His work has been published in fourteen monographs, including Soul City, California Anonymous, Course of the Empire, Midnight La Frontera, What’s Going On? 1969-1974, Valley of Shadows and Dreams, Coal Hollow, Delta Time, Texas Death Row, To the Promised Land, With These Hand and In the Fields. He is the author of the text Witness in Our Time: Lives of Working Documentary Photographers in its second edition and Picturing Resistance.

Light is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Photographers Fellowships the Dorothea Lange Fellowship and grnat from the Soros Open Society Institute. His work has been in numerous magazines, newspapers and a variety of media (electronic & film) and presented in over 250 exhibitions worldwide including one person shows at the International Center for Photography (NYC), Oakland Museum of California, S.E. Museum of Photography, Visual Studies Workshop, Visa pour L’image Perpignan (France) and the San Jose Museum of Art.

Light is the Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at the U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Allie Haeusslein is the Curator of Photography at the SFO Museum, an AAM-accredited museum located within the San Francisco International Airport. Founded in 1980 as the first cultural institution of its kind in an airport, the museum presents a dynamic program of rotating exhibitions on art, history, science, and culture, and maintains a permanent collection of aviation artifacts.

Previously, Haeusslein was a Director at Pier 24 Photography, the largest space dedicated to photography in North America during its fifteen-year run. During her tenure, she contributed to all aspects of the organization’s operations, including exhibitions, publications, and public programs. She conceived and edited Photographers Looking at Photographs: 75 Pictures from the Pilara Foundation Collection (2019).

Her writing has appeared in ART21 Magazine, British Journal of Photography, Foam Magazine, and HOTSHOE, among others. In 2024, she co-edited and contributed an essay to Soft Eyes, published by Deadbeat Club, which expands upon the exhibition of the same name that she curated at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California, in 2022.
