About this Event
The future of speech has never been so uncertain in the West. Join us on October 24 for an important debate on the limits of free speech online.
Thierry Breton may have gone, but the European battle over tech platforms, misinformation, and online speech is just beginning. From the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov to the EU’s enormous powers to control speech online, a debate is well overdue on the scope of free speech online.
Join us at Salon Liberté, where we dive into the complex and evolving landscape of media freedom, freedom of speech, and the limits of expression in Western societies. In an era where tech giants play a significant role in shaping public discourse, Europe's regulatory stance towards online speech is under intense scrutiny.
Are these measures necessary safeguards against misinformation and harmful content, or do they represent an overreach that stifles freedom of expression? Inspired by the discussions around tech speech regulation, particularly in the context of high-profile figures and platforms, we aim to explore the delicate balance between maintaining open dialogue and protecting societal values.
Engage with thinkers, policymakers, and advocates as we examine the implications of this crucial debate in the heart of Brussels.
Speakers include:
Norman Lewis: Digital expert and commentator; author, Musk, Telegram and the European Assault on Online Speech; visiting research fellow, MCC Brussels
