"A Fusion of Cultural Heritage and Musical Innovation"
The hikaeme Trio consists of Taiko Saito (marimba, vibraphone, kakeai, taiko drum), Yuko Oshima (drums, rin, lead singer "shukashu"), and Rieko Okuda (piano, kakeai). Saito and Okuda reside in Berlin, while Oshima lives in Strasbourg.
The trio was founded in May 2024 by three Japanese musicians who have all lived abroad for an extended period. Each of us is deeply rooted in Western culture, but with this project, we aim to focus on our origins and memories, and express the sounds that have always existed within us.
The primary goal of this project is to merge traditional Japanese music—such as Nagauta, Ondo, and Hayashi—with Western music styles like free jazz, avant-garde jazz, rock, and improvisation, to create new forms of musical expression. It is a quest for our authenticity and identity.
Nagauta (長唄) is a form of traditional Japanese music often used in Kabuki theater, consisting of long, emotional songs performed by lead singers (Shukashu 主歌手) and accompanied by instruments such as the shamisen and taiko drums, along with backing vocals (Kakeai 掛け合い). Ondo (音頭) is a rhythmic music style often performed at festivals for dancing, accompanied by taiko drums, shamisen, and flutes. Hayashi (囃子) refers to the instrumental accompaniment used during traditional festivals and performances, especially in Noh and Kabuki theater.
Yuko Oshima has intensively studied Nagauta singing in recent years. Saito grew up with Hokkai Bon-uta, an Ondo from her native Hokkaido, and has performed various Ondo as a taiko drummer. She also studied contemporary taiko drumming techniques under Ryo Ando at Toho Gakuen School. Okuda danced the Kawachi Ondo annually during her youth. Our musical paths have led us through different cultures and countries, gathering diverse experiences and influences along the way. However, the sounds of the hikaeme Trio are deeply rooted in our past and cultural heritage. With this unique connection, built through our shared Japanese heritage and long careers abroad, the hikaeme Trio seeks to foster the potential of its creative output with the support of the Berlin Senate.

"Eine Verschmelzung von kulturellem Erbe und musikalischer Innovation"
Das hikaeme Trio besteht aus Taiko Saito (Marimba, Vibraphon, Kakeai, Taiko-Trommel), Yuko Oshima (Schlagzeug, Rin, Hauptsängerin "Shukashu") und Rieko Okuda (Klavier, Kakeai). Saito und Okuda leben in Berlin, während Oshima in Straßburg lebt.
Das Trio wurde im Mai 2024 von drei japanischen Musikerinnen gegründet, die alle über längere Zeit im Ausland gelebt haben. Jede von uns ist tief in der westlichen Kultur verwurzelt, doch mit diesem Projekt möchten wir uns auf unsere Ursprünge und Erinnerungen konzentrieren und die Klänge zum Ausdruck bringen, die schon immer in uns existiert haben.
Das primäre Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, traditionelle japanische Musik – wie Nagauta, Ondo und Hayashi – mit westlichen Musikstilen wie Free Jazz, Avantgarde-Jazz, Rock und Improvisation zu verschmelzen, um neue Formen des musikalischen Ausdrucks zu schaffen. Es ist eine Suche nach unserer Authentizität und Identität.
Nagauta (長唄) ist eine Form traditioneller japanischer Musik, die häufig im Kabuki-Theater verwendet wird und aus langen, emotionalen Liedern besteht, die von Hauptsänger*innen (Shukashu 主歌手) vorgetragen und von Instrumenten wie der Shamisen und Taiko-Trommeln sowie Begleitgesang (Kakeai 掛け合い) begleitet werden. Ondo (音頭) ist ein rhythmischer Musikstil, der häufig bei Festen zum Tanzen gespielt wird, begleitet von Taiko-Trommeln, Shamisen und Flöten. Hayashi (囃子) bezeichnet die instrumentale Begleitung, die bei traditionellen Festen und Aufführungen eingesetzt wird, insbesondere im Noh- und Kabuki-Theater.
Yuko Oshima hat sich in den letzten Jahren intensiv mit dem Nagauta-Gesang beschäftigt. Saito wuchs mit dem Hokkai Bon-uta auf, einem Ondo aus ihrer Heimat Hokkaido, und hat verschiedene Ondo als Taiko-Trommlerin aufgeführt. Sie studierte außerdem zeitgenössische Taiko-Trommeltechniken bei Ryo Ando an der Toho Gakuen School. Okuda tanzte in ihrer Jugend jährlich den Kawachi Ondo.
Unsere musikalischen Wege haben uns durch verschiedene Kulturen und Länder geführt und dabei vielfältige Erfahrungen und Einflüsse gesammelt. Doch die Klänge des hikaeme Trios sind tief in unserer Vergangenheit und unserem kulturellen Erbe verwurzelt. Mit dieser einzigartigen Verbindung, die durch unser gemeinsames japanisches Erbe und unsere langjährigen Karrieren im Ausland entstanden ist, möchte das hikaeme Trio das Potenzial seines kreativen Schaffens mit der Unterstützung des Berliner Senats fördern.
