Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is a set of clinical interventions for treating seriously ill or injured children, typically up to 18. PALS is designed to address paediatric patients’ unique needs and challenges during life-threatening emergencies. Once this course has been completed, candidates will be able to perform a systematic approach to assessing a seriously ill or injured child, recognise and manage a child in respiratory distress and failure, and compensate for hypotensive shock. Participants will be able to identify and manage a child with a life-threatening Brady Cardia, Tachy Cardia or Sinus rhythm and prevent further deterioration during stabilisation and transfer. Candidates will be able to perform practical respiratory management skills, including the use of oxygen delivery devices, ventilation and intubation, as well as the appropriate use of electrical therapy, including defibrillation, synchronised cardioversion, and IV access techniques, including intra-osseous and fluid bolus administration.
Duration:
2 Full Days
Target Audience:
The Course is available to any healthcare professional registered as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior Intern, Professional Nurse or Advanced Life Support Paramedic. Although not mandatory, prior participation in an ACLS Course is recommended.
Course Structure:
PALS is a practical, case-based Course that will enhance one’s skills in evaluating and managing an infant or child with respiratory compromise, circulatory compromise or cardiac arrest. Ideal performance is initially demonstrated via video and Instructor. Learning is facilitated by extensive hands-on practice, with each participant getting several opportunities to lead their team in simulated clinical scenarios, guided by positive and constructive feedback.
Assessment Type:
A comprehensive study package comprising a 274-page American Heart Association PALS Provider Manual, accompanying CD, Algorithm Memory Card and a 94-page Course Guide is supplied before participation in the PALS course. The accompanying CD contains 250 pages of supplementary information, practice cases and a pre-course self-assessment test. Participants must possess an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate to participate in this course. Candidates will receive an American Heart Association Paediatric Advanced Life Support Card and Certificate upon successfully completing the course.
