Education in palliative and end-of-life care is centred on developing a confident, compassionate and clinically skilled workforce capable of delivering high quality, person centred care across community services. Teaching is designed for District Nursing, VW and UCR teams, recognising the distinct yet complementary roles each service plays in supporting people during the last year of life. The programme combines current evidence, national policy and clinical best practice with practical application, enabling learners to translate knowledge into safe and effective clinical decision-making. Core themes include holistic assessment, identification of deterioration, symptom management, advance care planning, communication, ethical and legal considerations, care in the last days of life, care after death and multidisciplinary collaboration.Teaching is delivered using a variety of educational methods, including case-based discussions, simulation, reflective practice and interactive workshops, promoting critical thinking, clinical reasoning and autonomous practice. Emphasis is placed on recognising the individual needs of patients in the last year an the last days of life and those important to them focusing on the UCP, symptoms and medicines management ensuring care remains compassionate, coordinated and aligned with personal wishes and preferences.A strong focus is placed on integrated neighbourhood working, supporting professionals to understand their role within the wider multidisciplinary team and strengthening collaboration between primary care, community services, specialist palliative care, acute providers and social care. Education also promotes confidence in managing uncertainty, responding to complex clinical situations and communicating effectively across organisational boundaries. The overall aim is to strengthen workforce capability, improve the quality and consistency of palliative and end-of-life care, reduce unwarranted variation in practice and support people to receive timely, coordinated care in their preferred place. Education is viewed as a key driver for service improvement, clinical leadership and the delivery of equitable, high-quality palliative care across community and neighbourhood services.
