The Palatine Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Frederick Lowe, performs its Winter Concert, Songs of the Spirit, on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center, 150 E Wood St., Palatine. This thought-provoking concert explores inspiration, reflection, and the human spirit through sound as it brings together bold contemporary voices, timeless sacred influences, and beloved theatrical and cinematic music. From moments of quiet introspection to exuberant energy, each work offers a unique musical perspective on what moves and connects us.Program Highlights:
- Awayday by Adam Gorb – pays homage to the great days of the Broadway musical with its irresistible brashness and irrepressible high spirits.
- Unquiet Spirits by John Mackey – celebrates a moment of transformation through a waltz full of longing and otherworldly sweetness.
- Give Us This Day by David Maslanka – inspired by Buddhism and the premise that Earth’s future is only possible if individuals become deeply mindful of themselves, deeply connected to who they really are.
- Overture to Gypsy by Jule Styne, arr. Gourlay – a medley of Broadway standards full of brilliance and the allure of show business.
- Hymns from the Rig Veda by Gustav Holst, arr. Windram/Mitchell – an ancient Indian sacred collection of Vedic hymns of timeless beauty.
- Spirited Away by Joe Hisaishi, arr. Morita – the fantastical and lyrical music from the beloved anime film.
Songs of the Spirit promises an afternoon of music that energizes and resonates long after the final note.
