Free art talk organised by Stockport Art Guild and hosted by Julia Marwood. It wasn’t just L S Lowry who was inspired to paint Manchester, the northern powerhouse that burst onto the world stage as Cottonopolis during the Industrial Revolution. This lecture explores the history of the city as seen through the eyes of artists, from George Cruikshank, a Londoner who was moved to put pen to paper by a great event which unfolded here - the Peterloo Massacre – to Adolphe Valette, the Manchester Impressionist, and ending with Halima Cassell, a contemporary sculptor whose fascination with the buildings of the city began with childhood visits there and inspired her later work.
