About Joe Orr

Working primarily from sketches made on location, Joseph Orr’s finished paintings capture the essence of a setting with attention to light and shadow to spark a mood. His studies are centered in scenes of solitude allowing the viewer to sit with the artist at the scene.

An early champion of the acrylic painting medium, Joseph is recognized as a contributor to the contemporary art world and has written chapters and instructional material for several Northlight Books. Additionally, the magazines Art of the West , Southwest Art , American Artist, The Artists and Workshop have featured his work. His paintings have been included in numerous national and prominent Art Exhibits and have won many awards.

Most recently Joseph has been invited to participate as a ‘faculty’ member, providing demonstration video and answer session for Acrylic Live Online in March, 2026. His 50+ years knowledge and expertise with the Acrylic medium qualify his authority on the subject.

Joseph Orr is a founder and current signature member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society (NOAPS) and a signature member of the American Impressionist Soceity (AIS). He works from his studio in Osage Beach, MO and is represented by The Eisele Gallery in Cincinnati, OH; Kodner Gallery, St. Louis, MO; Highlands Gallery, Lambertville, NJ and Red Piano Gallery, Bluffton/Hilton Head, SC

Philosophy

“Unlike the idea of abstract or other sorts of ‘modern’ art, for me, the idea is that painting should follow some form of illustration and truth telling. Basically, the premise of my painting philosophy is to build layers of narrative into my paintings. A place, or landscape scene is never defined satisfactorily without it’s relationship to color and composition. It is important to balance fact with imagination.

I love the process of creativity. When I’m in the middle of a painting I am most alive and feel that my paintings are a collaboration of past, present and future.

The past is my accumulated years of observing and painting experience. The present is the scene or idea of what is in front of me. The future is the manipulation of the paint on canvas, in my way, by my hand, to develop it into the work of art, i.e my story.

Over the course of a lifetime tastes change and artists, at some point, may find their work ‘out of fashion’ or ‘favor’. Time becomes the only true critic.
