Dates: Sat Oct 3, 10am-3pm. Ticket Price: WGGC Member $75 + Eventbrite fee. Non-member $85 + Eventbrite fee. Materials fee: $20. Skills Needed: Beginner; some hand-sewing experience is helpful but not necessary. Class Limit: 16 students total, 7 minimum. Age Limit: Adult, 18 and over.

This one-day workshop will introduce a range of techniques in translating a favorite plant subject into a vibrant illustration in yarn and fabric. We will cover basic drawing/rendering and transferring of quick sketches to base fabrics along with simple stitches in crewel embroidery for depicting details and plant construction. We will also practice hand-applique and quilting techniques for rendering leaves and larger plant structures. Participants will bring images of a favorite plant and/or can use instructor-provided botanical illustrations for inspiration. This class is beginner-friendly; some experience in hand sewing will be helpful but is not required.
The materials fee paid to the instructor will supply embroidery yarns, embroidery and applique needles, embroidery hoops, fabrics for the background and plant structures, chalk markers and tracing paper, and illustrations of plants for inspiration.
Materials and Supplies that Students should bring to the workshop:
- A sketchbook or notebook, pencil, scissors for use on yarn and fabric, and image(s) of a favorite plant (or choose one at the workshop). Optional: scrap fabrics for plant structures in preferred colors.
- Bring your lunch and beverages. A microwave and refrigerator are provided.
- Materials Fee: $20. Please bring cash or check made out to instructor for payment during the workshop.

Artist Bio:
Sara Torgison is an interdisciplinary artist who challenges boundaries and exploits contradictions. An expert ceramicist and fiber artist skilled in traditional techniques, she surprises the viewer by merging hard and soft materials, juxtaposing hand-stitching with hand-formed objects, applying plant extracts (natural dyes) to render plant-structure images in cloth, and combining beauty and tactile appeal with often shocking subject matter. Employing earth-sourced materials and age-old crafts underscores her messages that humans lack care and reverence for nature and disregard ancient wisdom that arose from our interdependence with all life.
Sara holds degrees in zoology (BS) and fine arts (BFA and MFA) and teaches at area universities and Queen City Clay. Most recently, she was artist-in-residence at the Lloyd Library and Museum. There she did extensive research on botanicals as medicines and dyes and created an exhibition of mixed-media artworks inspired by her exploration of the Lloyd’s extraordinary collection.
If you are not feeling well, please contact the workshop chair instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded. Depending on the CDC guidelines for Hamilton County at the time the workshop is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first workshop.
Fees are normally not refundable except for these contingencies:
(1) If the workshop is canceled, your ticket cost will be refunded in full.
(2) If the workshop is changed to a different date, you have the option to apply your ticket cost to retain your place; otherwise, a full refund can be given.
(3) If you are unable to attend the workshop and if you contact the workshop chair at least thirty days before the workshop date, your ticket cost can be refunded minus the Eventbrite ticketing fees.
(4) If you cancel less than thirty days before the workshop, your ticket cost will not be refunded, but it may be possible to make alternative arrangements so that your fee and place in the workshop are not forfeited; contact the workshop chair for options.
