WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Hilary Gomes’ workshop will introduce you to the basics of outdoor landscape painting using environmentally safe, water-mixable oil paints. The workshop will include instruction on composing successful compositions, painting light and shadow patterns, and mixing colors to create convincing skies and water.

MORE DETAILS Class Size: Limited to 5–8 students, beginning to intermediate level welcome Age: 18 years and older
Friday evening, July 10: Meet at Art Bias, Studio 114, for a 2-hour meet-and-greet session held in the classroom. The session will include a discussion of materials, easel and paint setup, drawing practice, and examples of outdoor landscape paintings.
Saturday, July 11: Class will meet on location. Hilary will do a drawing and painting demonstration, and students will have the opportunity to practice thumbnail drawings. In the afternoon, students will have the opportunity to complete one painting with one-on-one instruction.
Sunday, July 12: Class will meet on location. You will paint your second painting in the morning light. Students will return in the late afternoon to watch a live instructor demonstration and participate in a class critique.
MATERIALS LIST For outdoor landscape painting, the idea is to carry as few materials as possible, so that you can easily hike a short distance to your painting spot. Materials can be purchased through California Art Supply in San Mateo or Blick in San Jose. A full list of all materials will be sent to students upon enrollment.
Materials include: Small portable light Plein air easel with tripod (Recommended Ugo Brand) camping backpack, Plein air rolling chair, water-mixable oil paints (Holbein duo) and water-mixable linseed oil, brushes, water and clear plastic water container with lid, (2) 8” x 10” canvas/ boards, paper towels, plastic bags for soiled paper towels, baby wipes, sketch pad and pencils or markers, wet panel carrier, hat, sunscreen, water, palette knife for mixing, small sketchbook and pencil.

About the Instructor:
Hilary Gomes grew up in San Francisco and maintains a strong connection to the California Peninsula and the beauty of its local landscape.
Based at Art Bias Studio #226 in San Carlos, Gomes paints en plein air across the California Peninsula, drawing inspiration from beaches, skies, and atmospheric space, as well as locations such as Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and Crystal Springs Reservoir. She is a member of the Burlingame Plein Air Painters and teaches outdoor painting workshops for students of all levels.
In addition to her en plein air work, her oil paintings focus on flora and gardens, inspired by the flowers of Half Moon Bay and Filoli Gardens in Woodside, CA. Her work has appeared in American Art Review, American Art Collector, Circle Quarterly Art Review, International Artist Magazine, 480 Lighthouse Gallery in Pacific Grove, Gallery Mar Carmel, and the San Francisco Art Fair. Gomes has exhibited in solo, local, national, and international shows.
She studied at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, earned a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union in NYC, and received an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Iowa. Since 2001, she has taught thousands of students drawing, oil, watercolor, acrylic, and outdoor landscape painting at Foothill College. She has a strong passion for and expertise in painting outdoor nature and landscapes and looks forward to sharing this experience with participants.
