"Tokeya Waci U is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota tribe and a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe. Tokeya is known for various styles of art but is widely known for his ledger art, beadwork, quillwork and storytelling. His art is based on his cultural teachings and stories from his tribe(s), but relays them in a view that can be enjoyed by all tribal backgrounds as well as non-tribal backgrounds as a means to break misconstrued stereotypes about his culture. Tokeya's art skill started in his early years as a kid, mainly to draw his favorite tv characters and cut out the images in order to play with them as toys. His use of different media grew over time and so did his pride and yearning for cultural knowledge. He started his personal art business nearly 8 years ago and has since grown in notoriety throughout what is known as "Ndn country," for his usage of his art to teach and apply to others in a therapeutic setting."
