“(Center Stage) It’s about the union of hard work and artistic success. The be a world-class ballet dancer is to be and athlete of the highest order, and if you look at ballet as a sport, it has many Michael Jordans and the NBA only had one.” – Roger Ebert
The film is that. Where the height of athleticism meets the complexity of art. But it is not without the drama of youth. From the caste system of the art form to the body damaging body image issues, to the romance, it covers many bases. Writer Carol Heikkinen did her research into the industry and but more importantly she understands humanity and where youth fits into it. A proven record to be sure with screenplays Empire Records and The Things Called Love under her belt, she delivered. We are treated to all of that and several dynamic dance sequences. The abundance matched with the cinematic execution and the skillset of the real dancers it’s no wonder some claim Center Stage as one of the greatest dance movies put to film. It is a gift to see the power of the second coming of Baryshnikov, Ethan Stiefel, and Sascha Radetsky face off in love triangle and on the dance floor. We even get to see rookie Zoe Saldana (now Oscar winner) show sparks of excellence as the bad girl with the heart of gold. Wow! Who would risk missing the beginning of this three-month ballet series? I wouldn’t risk it. See ya at the movies! (VANYA GARRAWAY)
