FAQs

Who needs Paediatric First Aid training?

Paediatric First Aid is essential for anyone working with babies and young children in a professional capacity. This includes nursery staff, childminders, pre-school workers, teaching assistants in early years settings, out-of-school club workers, and nannies. Under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, at least one person with a valid Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present, and at least one person must accompany children on outings.

How long is the Paediatric First Aid certificate valid for?

Your Paediatric First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years, you will need to retake the full 2-day course to maintain your qualification - there is no shortened requalification option for Paediatric First Aid as there is for the standard First Aid at Work qualification. We recommend booking your renewal course well in advance of your expiry date to avoid any gap in your qualification.

What is the difference between Paediatric First Aid and Emergency First Aid at Work?

Paediatric First Aid (PFA) is specifically designed for people working with babies and children, covering child-specific emergencies like febrile seizures, meningitis, and choking in infants. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a general workplace qualification focused on adult casualties. If you work in a childcare setting such as a nursery or as a childminder, you need PFA to meet EYFS and Ofsted requirements - EFAW alone is not sufficient for early years roles.

Is there a minimum age to attend?

Delegates must be aged 16 or over to attend the Paediatric First Aid course. There is no upper age limit. The course is designed to be accessible to all, regardless of prior first aid experience, and our instructors provide supportive, hands-on guidance throughout.

Do I need any previous first aid experience?

No previous first aid experience or qualifications are required. The course is designed for complete beginners as well as those refreshing their skills. Our experienced instructors will guide you through every topic step by step, building your confidence through practical exercises with baby and child manikins.

What does the assessment involve?

Assessment is through continuous observation by the trainer throughout both days, plus written assessments covering the key topics. There are no formal written exams. Our instructors assess your practical skills and understanding as you work through scenarios and exercises, so by the time you reach the end of the course, you'll already know you've demonstrated competence. Most delegates find this approach far less stressful than traditional exams.

Does this course meet Ofsted requirements?

Our Paediatric First Aid course meets the requirements of the EYFS statutory framework. It provides the full 12-hour qualification required for staff working in early years settings. In line with EYFS and Ofsted requirements, at least one person with a current Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present, and additional staff may also be required to hold this qualification depending on their role and qualification date.

Does the course cover adult first aid as well?

Yes. While the primary focus is on babies and children, Day 2 includes essential adult first aid skills including adult CPR, the recovery position, and choking management for adults. This ensures you can respond to emergencies involving parents, carers, visitors, and colleagues as well as the children in your care.

How many people can attend each course?

Our classes are limited to a maximum of 12 delegates to ensure everyone receives personalised attention and plenty of hands-on practice time. Small group sizes mean you get more time with the instructor, more opportunities to practise on manikins, and a more supportive learning environment - which is particularly important when learning skills for protecting children.

What should I bring to the course?

We provide all training equipment, course materials, and workbooks. Just bring yourself and wear comfortable clothing as there will be practical activities including kneeling on the floor for CPR practice. We provide free refreshments throughout the day. If you have any specific needs or requirements, please let us know when booking and we will do our best to accommodate you.
