The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area preserves and protects 72 miles of the Mississippi River’s natural, cultural, and historical features. Along this 72‑mile stretch, the water carries stories carved into its banks over thousands of years.
Slip into a kayak or canoe to paddle and experience a leisurely three (3) miles of the Mississippi River in Anoka County as many have before you. National Park Service rangers will bring the river’s natural beauty, cultural meaning, and layered history to life. Together, we’ll explore what makes this part of the Mississippi unlike any other.
The River’s shifting sandbars and free-flowing prairie provide the backdrop to learn about the homelands and enduring presence of Dakota and Ho‑Chunk peoples. You’ll also discover how generations of Minnesotans—from early traders to today’s residents of Ramsey—have built their lives along its shores.
Come see the river not only as a landscape, but as a living thread that connects communities across time. Discover how its stories continue to shape the nation’s past, present, and future.

This is a FREE program thanks to the National Park Service and Mississippi Parks Connection. Registration will open two weeks prior to the event at 8 a.m. for Ramsey residents and 10 a.m. for non-residents.
This program is not recommended for beginners, and we recommend participants have paddling experience. It is intended for individuals ready to spend more time on a moving river or intermediate/advanced paddlers interested in the social atmosphere of paddling with a park ranger.
Youth under the age of 18 may participate if they are in a canoe or tandem kayak with an adult from their household. All participants must be able to maneuver a kayak or stern a canoe.
Cancellations: Events are rain/snow or shine. Participants must be prepared for expected weather and may be turned away, if not, for their safety. Events are canceled for lightning, excessive heat, sustained winds greater than 20 mph, heavy rain, insufficient staffing, unhealthy air quality, or high-water levels.
