Pacific Centre Complex Facility Tour: Heat Recovery & PCM Thermal Storage

Get an inside look at an innovative energy retrofit that transforms waste heat into a valuable low-carbon heating resource. This project implemented heat recovery systems across five buildings and a non-ice phase change material based thermal energy storage system which can store more than 6x the energy equivalent of chilled water.
By capturing waste heat from a shopping mall’s continuous cooling loads and redistributing it to adjacent towers served by Creative Energy steam, the project significantly improves energy efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The system combines advanced heat recovery chillers, heat pumps, and thermal energy storage to better align energy usage with available waste heat.
Learn how this groundbreaking project is projected to save 26,000 GJ of natural gas and reduce emissions by 1,300 tonnes of CO₂e annually, while also lowering water consumption and earning more than $1 million in utility and federal government incentives.
