About this Event
This event is part of a new speaker series OxyTalks “On Tap” starting with the topic of AI and Society, in partnership with Occidental College Dean's Office, the Library, and Center for Research and Scholarship.
It has been barely three years since ChatGPT was released, and it has already upended the job market. Every day we hear about layoffs due to AI, and it seems like anyone who isn't fluent in AI is being left behind. At the same time, there are still serious concerns with AI, including environmental impact, hallucinations and sycophancy, and broader issues about preparing entry-level workers with the skills for future high-level roles. For people just entering the job market, there is a mess of contradictory advice, mixed with anxiety about how to make a living without compromising on your values.
In this OxyTalks On Tap event, Professor Justin Li will talk with Dr. Salima Bhimani, Senior Fellow at AI 2030. They will explore questions like: How are companies and CEOs currently thinking about AI? What are the challenges and opportunities for early career professionals, and how should college students and recent graduates think about AI as they transition from school to full-time employment?
Justin Li is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Cognitive Science at Occidental College. His research focuses on how both people and AI are able to retrieve the right knowledge at the right time. He is also interested in computing as a force multiplier in inter-disciplinary research.
Salima Bhimani scales moonshot technology for global impact. She is the former first Chief Strategist for Alphabet Google's ‘Other Bets’ (e.g. Waymo, Wing) and is currently Senior Fellow at AI 2030.
