OWL Workshop Readings
Your Theatre, Inc.’s Original Works Lab (OWL) is currently producing Workshop Readings of
plays written by local playwrights as part of the program’s second season. Following a
successful first night of readings on May 20th, OWL will host two additional nights of readings
on June 16th and July 21st at 7pm at the Steeple Playhouse, 159 William Street, New Bedford,
MA. Each reading will be followed by a talkback. Admission is free to the public. Donations are
accepted at the door.
OWL is Your Theatre’s annual program dedicated to the development of original theatrical works
by emerging and established local playwrights. OWL provides writers the opportunity to receive
structured feedback, participate in a collaborative workshop process, and potentially see their
plays brought to life through readings and staged productions at the Steeple Playhouse. The
program supports bold, new voices and fosters the creation of original works within a
professional, community-based environment.
Nine scripts were selected from this season’s submission pool to advance to the Workshop
Reading phase of OWL. During this phase, playwrights partner with local theatre artists to
develop and refine their scripts to be presented on their Workshop Reading date. Your Theatre
members, OWL participants, and the audience vote on which plays will move on to the staged
production phase.
Tim Lehnert’s Rattus Norvegicus, Christopher Podrecca’s In the Cold Light of Day, and Bill
Maya’s The Aisle of Doctor Moreau were presented in May. In June, OWL will present R. Jim
Stahl’s I Want to Be Ready, Nicole Perullo’s The Waiting Room, and Shai Afsai’s Man of
Appetite (Baal Tayve). In July, OWL returns with Allison Whittenberg’s Eat, James Ferguson’s
Sleep Talker, and Christine Benvenuto’s Kristallnacht for Young Professionals.
“OWL is a vibrant program and an accessible service that Your Theatre is proud to provide to
local playwrights, including those based right here in the Southcoast. Our playwright-centered,
collaborative feedback process results in highly engaging readings and artist talkbacks that give
writers further opportunity to fine-tune their scripts,” says James Sanguinetti, Your Theatre
Co-Artistic Director & OWL Chairperson.
Staged productions for three OWL finalists will be presented in October.
