Shrub options:
American Beautyberry – American Beautyberry is a gorgeous shrub native to the southeastern United States known for its electric purple berries that appear in the late summer/early fall. The berries look like candy for birds and can last on the branches through the winter. They are fast growers, like sun to part sun, and can get 4-6 feet tall.
Fragrant Sumac – aromatic sumac requires little care and no coddling. This tough plant is extremely tolerant, accepting sun or partial shade, moist or dry soils as long as they are well-drained, and accepts drought, erosion, rabbit nibbling, raccoon, opossum, and chipmunk activity. Once dormant, it can survive temperatures down to -25 degrees F.
Elderberry- Native to North America, this large flowering and fruitful shrub attracts bees, butterflies, and many birds. In June tiny, lemon-scented, white flowers appear and then develop into black fruits in late summer. The fruits have been used in jams, jellies, pie fillings and elderberry wine. The flowers are also edible.
