About this Event
We're staying late at the Mills this Spring to bring you the Overtime Art Club sessions! Come along for relaxed evenings of drawing, collage, stitching and more - all facilitated by local emerging artists.
You're welcome to bring your own drinks to the session, we'll provide all the materials you'll need but please bring your own stone!
This season's sessions are a series of Ones to Watch specials, getting to know some of our exhibiting emerging artists and learning new skills in a relaxed setting! We are keen to help our Ones to Watch artists develop other areas of their careers outside of Gallery walls, and find many artists and makers diversify their practice through teaching workshops.
In this workshop participants will learn to weave using only a stone, a needle and some yarn to create a beautiful and unique ornamental stone. Through this accessible approach to weaving, participants will learn basic weaving techniques and simple approaches to designing weaving patterns and tapestries, as well as explore how traditional textiles practices such as weaving can allow us to engage with the material world through a tactile form of knowledge production.
Please bring your own stone / item to weave around.
Artist Bio
Tom Hardwick is a Leeds-based artist exploring the material framework of knowledge and the language of documentation through the medium of textiles. Adopting handweaving as a mode of documenting, Tom’s practice seeks to interrogate and expose the conventions of documentation, resisting the dematerialising urge of Western knowledge and advocating for a deliberately slow and laborious approach, in which the document is not a carrier of information, but an action through which knowledge is immanent, tactile, subjective and terrestrial.
You can view Tom's work within the Gallery until 29th March. Read more about Ones to Watch 2026 here.
Please note - these sessions are suitable for anyone aged 18+
