Join GRAAA for our annual overnight Perseid meteor watch, taking place again this year at Cascade Township Park! The annual Perseid Meteor Shower will reach peak activity overnight on August 12-13, with the best viewing after midnight. If the sky is clear, the meteors should start around the sky at a rate of one or two per minute during the height of the shower, some leaving impressive vapor trails.
Cascade Township Park has extensive grassy areas and a good view of the sky. Members of GRAAA will be in a designated area near the restrooms during the watch hours to orient viewers, and will have several telescopes set up until 3:00am. There is ample parking near the viewing area.
The meteor observing is a naked eye event and participants are invited to bring lawn chairs, sleeping bags, blankets and pillows for comfort, light snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. August nights can get chilly, so hats and jackets are also recommended.
REMINDER: This event will take place only if the sky is clear enough to permit satisfactory viewing. Status updates will be posted at graaa.org, our Facebook page, and a recorded message at 616-897-7065 no later than noon on August 12.
