Outside of Eden brings together poetry and music to reflect upon innocence lost, faith tested, and courage found. At the heart of the programme is Frank Martin’s 'Mass for Double Choir', written privately between 1922 and 1926 as an intensely personal act of faith, and withheld from performance for over forty years. Aeftersang Ensemble explores music alongside this work that whispers of remembrance and resilience, honouring women’s voices across time. From the tender devotions of Galina Grigorjeva to moments of quiet witness by Paul Smith and Joanna Marsh, we also explore prayers of St Francis of Assisi by Francis Poulenc, and lamentations of William Blake's Daughters of Albion. The concert culminates in Elisabet Dijkstra’s 'Agnus Dei', commissioned for the Archbishop of York’s White Ribbon Evensong at Durham Cathedral and written in memory of Sarah Everard, stands as a moving act of witness in an ongoing fight for justice.
Join us at 8pm on Saturday 7th February in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford for Outside of Eden, where women’s voices - past, present, and lost - remain vivid and alive.
