About this Event
This concert is unified by radical seventeenth-century approaches to harmony, centered on Farina’s little-known avant-garde masterpiece Capriccio Stravagante. Full of brilliant humour, rustic vigor, and startling stillness, it calls for instrumental techniques never before recorded in music history (and dissonance not seen again for 400 years). Farina’s unorthodoxy is complimented by similarly daring music from across baroque Europe.
The Morley Consort grew from a mutual realisation that our individual passions (historical pedagogy, obscure repertoire, iconographical luthiery/bow-making, and music as a social space) were a springboard for presenting seventeenth-century music from a fresh, innovative framework. Comprised of Sophia Mücke (violin), Madison Marshall (viola/violin), Tess Roberts (viols), and Jude Chandler (violone), we are an ensemble of students and graduates from the Royal Academy of Music’s Historical Performance program. Our self-directed academic research brings exciting under-represented repertoire to new audiences in accessible settings.
