About this Event

Larger than the sum of its parts, The Compound is a complex of spaces and a collective of artists, institutionally intersecting creativity, sociology, and the adaptive use of space. With a footprint the size of a city block, we incubate over 30 local creatives, house a number of community businesses and nonprofit organizations, and host innovative public programs that challenge the roles of a nonprofit art space.

Outside In is an opportunity for us to showcase the current state of production taking place at The Compound. Behind our doors, limitless structural iterations unfold in the pursuit of balancing the collective needs and desires of the community—we are defined by our flexibility to adapt, mutate and evolve. The best way to understand our vision, in its most current state, is to experience it.

Through interactive workshops and panel discussions, guests will be invited to explore various active concepts with guidance from our artist community. While exploring open studios and our collective exhibition, audiences can engage those who base their practices at the Compound. Our courtyard will offer a central place to gather, hear live music, share meals, enjoy refreshments, and cultivate community between activities.

We invite you to join the nurturing of an organic creative movement; to spend the day with us—outside, inside, and in between.

🕑: 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Pottery Painting (RSVP!)
Host: Melanie Jelacic

Info: Ceramic Workshop led by MEJELCO: Paint Your Own Pottery
Incense Holder, Ashtray, Soap Dish or Small Tray

Come and paint your own pottery on several different handmade designs by mejelco. Anyone can join in. Pottery, paint brushes and glazes are provided.

Note: You will need to return for pickup of your pottery once they have been fired. Spaces limited. One piece of pottery per person. All pottery is first come first served.

🕑: 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Abstract Still-life Painting Workshop (RSVP!)
Host: Milli Grice

Info: Still-life drawing, typically used by beginners as an exercise to familiarise themselves with light and space, is transformed by Artist Milli Grice into a more fantastical practice. Participants will first sketch the ‘daily objects still-life’ provided by Artist, then stop looking at the actual objects and instead focus solely on the initial drawing itself, thereby allowing abstract roots to emerge and branch out.

🕑: 04:00 PM - 06:30 PM
Open Studios

Info: Featuring many artist-tenants of the Compound, get a tour of their creative adventures! Some artists will also vend in their studios!

🕑: 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Roses in the Salad: Community Soup Making and Vegetable-Printing (RSVP!)
Host: Sonia Ruscoe

Info: Roses in the Salad is a participatory workshop exploring the relationship between cooking, craft, and food-based art. Working together in Compound’s kitchen, participants will prepare a large pot of community soup while transforming the vegetables’ offcuts and choppings into playful prints.
Inspired by the gentle genius of Bruno Munari (1907–98), the workshop invites participants to look closely at the shapes, textures, and patterns found in everyday ingredients. A radicchio stalk can become a flower; a cabbage, pepper, tomato, lettuce, or Brussels sprout can become a stamp. Through simple, hands-on processes, participants will discover the visual poetry already present in the food we prepare and eat.

🕑: 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM
Renovation of Information Cocoons: Shirkerism x Kristen Landsman
Host: Shirkerism & Kristen Landsman

Info: A clandestine dystopian vision has emerged between digital content and the tangible world of magazines and phenomenological meme art—is it ultimately that people crave the ‘tangible’?

This panel discussion invites Shirkerism magazine founders and painter Kristen Landsman to explore, from two vastly different practices, how information is transmitted and coupled between the online, the physical and the online in internet pop culture. This will lead to a discussion of why, in the age of second-hand information, we are constantly renovating our information cocoons, the gravitational pull between mass culture and internet culture, and the information chasms that the two artists have experienced, inherited, overcome or succumbed to within their respective practices.

🕑: 04:00 PM - 09:00 PM
Compound Bar and Local Food Trucks
🕑: 07:00 PM - 08:00 PM
From「The Breakfast Club」to The Grassroots Nature of A Community
Host: Rui Jiang

Info: Gallery Panel Discussion during Gallery Opening Reception. All are welcome!
From「The Breakfast Club」: The Grassroots Nature of ‘Community’ and Its Temporal and Spatial Relations
This panel discussion, opened by the movie The Breakfast Club, will use the chance encounters and playful dynamics depicted in this coming-of-age film to spark a discussion on community practice. It will examine the fluid and spontaneous nature of grassroots community-building within Compound and beyond, and explore how these connections—originating from physical, tangible links—evolve into enclaves that transcend time and space.

🕑: 06:00 PM - 09:00 PM
A Case for the Muse: Tenant Exhibition Opening Reception
Host: The Compound
🕑: 06:00 PM - 09:00 PM
