About this Event

Outdoor Odyssey, formerly known as Becoming an Outdoors Woman - Utah, is hosting an overnight workshop to introduce adults, especially women, to basic camping and kayaking. Join a fun group as we venture to the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry to learn the basics of kayaking in a positive and empowering environment. We will kayak from Glen Canyon Dam to Lee's Ferry and spend one night on the river. (This is a flat water stretch with occasional waves caused by passing boats.)

When: June 1-2, 2026

Who: Adults, especially women (18+ years old), no experience necessary

Where: We will meet at the USU Extension office at the Washington County Fairgrounds at 8:00am on Monday, June 1. We will travel about 3 hours to Lee's Ferry where we will take a backhaul taxi upriver to Glen Canyon Dam. We will kayak 16 miles over two days and will spend the night at a campsite on the Colorado River. We will return to the USU Extension office on Tuesday, June 2, in the evening around 7:00pm (return time may vary)

Cost: $200 (includes transportation to and from Lee's Ferry, a backhaul taxi up to Glen Canyon Dam, a two-day kayak rental, food (Monday night dinner, Tuesday breakfast and lunch), and a small tip for the backhaul taxi guides.

What: Enjoy a wonderful outdoor adventure with others as you increase your outdoor skills and confidence. Learn about water safety, basic camping, simple kayaking skills, and other pertinent information while experiencing the beautiful Colorado River. We will provide dinner (Monday), breakfast, and lunch (Tuesday).

You will need to bring: a dry bag (look for rental option when purchasing your ticket), a change of clothes, a lightweight sleeping bag, a sturdy water bottle, shoes that can get wet, a bathing suit (or quick drying clothes), sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, personal hygiene items, a sack lunch for Monday, and money for dinner or snack on Tuesday.

Minimum requirements: You will need to be able to

  • walk short distances carrying your own bag
  • get in and out of a kayak and pull it up onto shore
  • sit for extended periods of time
  • be comfortable sleeping outside on the ground

Please note that this activity will be geared toward beginners. If you have any questions, please reach out to Andrea at [email protected] or call the USU Extension office at 435-301-7740.

We hope you'll join us for a fabulous excursion!
