Cirkus Kolektiv is thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for artists and collectives working in contemporary circus and outdoor arts. We are seeking two participants for our Outdoor Art Research Lab residency program in Split, Croatia, a residency program supported by CultureMovesEurope! This residency offers a unique platform for artists to explore and develop new creations within the vibrant and historic city of Split.
PROJECT IDEA:
Our residency program seeks to foster outdoor exploration and creation within contemporary circus and outdoor arts. By focusing on public spaces and their specific contexts, we hope to encourage a unique approach to artistic expression that is currently underrepresented in Croatia. The Outdoor Art Research Lab residency program can foster a vibrant dialogue between artists, local communities, and the urban landscape, ultimately reimagining Split's public spaces as places of connection and creativity.
PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:
● Conduct research and create in outdoor spaces and their specific contexts
● Collaborate with local artists and communities
● Develop innovative and site-specific outdoor art projects
● Receive mentorship and production support
● Participate in public presentations and events
● Give workshops to the local community in their field of interest
BACKGROUND:
In recent years, Split has experienced a significant transformation, shifting from a primarily residential city to a thriving tourist destination. This transition has had a profound impact on both the tangible and intangible aspects of urban life. As tourism has expanded, gentrification and the homogenization of public spaces have led to a decline in their accessibility and relevance for residents. Consequently, public spaces in Split have become increasingly marginalized in the mental maps and daily lives of residents, contributing to a sense of disconnection between the community and their city.
WHO CAN APPLY:
We invite all artists and collectives working in the fields of contemporary circus, outdoor arts, or related disciplines to apply, regardless of their level of experience.
Whether you are already a professional or just starting out, we are eager to support your artistic journey.
WE ARE PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN APPLICANTS WHO DEMONSTRATE:
● A passion for pushing the boundaries of contemporary circus and outdoor arts
● A desire to create work that connects with public spaces and their unique contexts
● A willingness to engage with the local community of Split
The selection jury composed of five experienced professionals will carefully review all applications and select two artists to participate in the residency program. The selected artists will have the opportunity to collaborate on a shared artistic concept or choose to pursue individual projects during their residency. While the residency program provides a unique opportunity for artists to work together, the ultimate decision regarding collaboration or individual projects rests with the selected artists.
*If a collective applies and is selected for the residency, only two members of the collective will be able to participate. Please ensure that your collective is prepared to designate two representatives to attend the residency program.
FOCUS ON EXPLORATION:
The residency is primarily focused on exploration and experimentation. There is no requirement to create or premiere a final product. The goal is to provide artists with a space to delve into new ideas and encourage the development of an outdoor creation that directly refers to the performance space and is shaped by it.
WHAT WE OFFER:
● 22-day residency in Split (indoor and outdoor workspace available)
● Public presentation of your exploration and creation during Split Calling Festival 2025
● Production support
● Audience discussions and moderation
● Feedback and guidance during the exploration
● Networking opportunities
● Promotion and visibility

Cirkus Kolektiv will cover travel expenses, accommodation, and a per diem of 25 euros per day during the residency period including travel expenses, accommodation and fee for the Split Calling 2025 festival presentation.
