About this Event
At times, the sun is very active and life on Earth is subjected to radiation flares and gigantic "coronal mass ejections" which can reduce GPS function and affect power grids. Earth’s protective magnetic field and atmosphere defend against these space storms and protect life, a battle we sometimes witness as the aurora borealis, or northern lights.
Beside learning about these colossal space events, we will use telescopes to safely view the sun's surface and see sunspots and maybe other features. Please consider downloading the free spaceweatherlive app from their website or in the apple or google play store. We will show you how to use the app to track space weather as measured by satellites and ground stations right on your phone.
**This event will still meet if the skies are partly cloudy, but we will need to cancel for rain or complete overcast.
Who Is Invited:
Ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets, please.
Reservations required!
Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group (Scouts, home school group, etc.) for a program at Government Canyon, please email the Park Interpreter to schedule at a different time.
Where to Meet:
This activity meets at the Pinic Pavillion. Lot A or B will be the closest parking.

How to Prepare:
Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We sometimes fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, you can pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you in this event! You must also register at the Friends of GCSNA website linked above.
Seating is on limestone benches. A blanket, portable chair, or stadium seat is suggested to make sitting more comfortable.
Dress for time outdoors in summer. Remember that sunscreen, a hat, and bug spray may be helpful. Bring at least 32 oz of water per person.
